“FoodCare for Healthcare” Conferences to be held in Texas

Dallas— Feb 1, 2008 —Texas Dietary Managers Association, Texas Woman’s University and Common-Sense Marketing today kicked off registration for the conference, “FoodCare for Healthcare 2008.” Focused on food safety, nutrition, and sustainable best practice, the conference delivers continuing education and networking for healthcare purchasing directors and foodservice managers.

One-on-One Training

Healthcare facilities, including hospitals, convalescent centers, longterm care and assisted living, feed our most vulnerable population—the sick and the elderly.  It is vital that these kitchen directors and workers learn the latest best practices, face-to-face, in a participatory setting. FoodCare takes nationally recognized speakers to regional suburban cities in Texas, where the healthcare market is growing in rural as well as urban areas. During March, National Nutrition month, there will be two FoodCare for Healthcare conferences: one in Longview, and one in Denton, Texas.

“We need to be sure the best information gets to everyone preparing food for patients,” states Carolyn Bednar, professor of nutrition and food sciences at Texas Woman’s University. “FoodCare is a day or half day event, so a busy manager can easily work it in.”

National Experts

To update foodservice directors about food safety, FoodCare has recruited Dr. Doug Powell, scientific director of the International Food Safety Network, headquartered at Kansas State University. With an unusual background, combining microbiology and journalism, Dr. Powell is ideally suited to develop food safety training. His methods are unorthodox and effective, using humor and working with new media, including blogs, YouTube, and T-shirts with slogans.

In healthcare foodservice management, sustainable means waste-free. The pioneering company in waste management is LeanPath, a company which teaches managers how to analyze and trim waste, reconfiguring their operation. At FoodCare, Andrew Shakman, CEO of LeanPath, will demonstrate the value of waste management in hospital settings, and deliver case studies from healthcare customers.

First of Its Kind

FoodCare brings learning from industry and academic experts directly to the managers who need it. “In this day of webinars and remote learning, no one has time to take three days off to attend a conference,” states Mindy Siegel, FoodCare development director. “We want to try something different, and bring the learning and teachers you need, to the facility’s doorstep.”
